The experimental piece of 4’33” lead many to outrage in its time of delivery, but in my opinion, it tries to pull from the performance art that is music and how rethinking our perception of the craft alters our brain chemistry. I think this is particularly evident when seeing the other pianist recreating the works in a variety of settings. Through the writing, I felt enthralled with the idea of going into the woods to merely sit in the peace of others, and simply listen to the music of life. I think this article is a greater glimpse at the psyche that is John Cage, from his comments on being a Harvard professor to his life as a whole simply an enigma. It was interesting to learn of his parental background, having a father who thought of early renditions of submarines and a mother who was a professional writer it only makes sense that John developed such a sense to connect with people. I found it also interesting that his instructor, Schoenberg, ingrained the idea that music should “-exercise a critical function, disturbing rather than comforting the listener.” I think my brainstorm for the following sound project has been altered in the way that to appreciate John Cage I must try to use my collected sounds to generate something I had not considered yet. I found the last line particularly exciting for I live right above the bustling 13th street, and the sounds for Boulder’s Hill often ring through my home which too never repeat.
